Bright Whites for Summer Nights!
When the heat of summer arrives, we break out our lighter, refreshing white wines. Not just any whites! We avoid the powerful, oaky chardonnays with full body and lots of alcohol, and look to whites that are light and bright. Whites take on this duty effortlessly. They're crisp, chilled, and often have lower alcohol levels than reds, keeping you relaxed, revitalized, and less dehydrated.
And we break some traditional wine rules in drinking them. Some of the nicest summer whites are from grapes that are less familiar to us than the standard chardonnays.
We drink them refreshingly cool, even down to 40 degrees — way cooler than big reds, and even cooler than regular whites. We often like a bit of sweetness in the wines, to go with simple summer foods — fresh fruit, grilled veggies, fruit salads, potato salads, sandwiches, shellfish or other seafood.
We treat these wines casually. We drink them outdoors, where the wind would blow away any highfalutin' aromas in any case.
And we don’t cellar these wines for long aging. Carpe Diem is the rule. When the leaves fall, it’ll be time for heartier red wines!
Join us this Friday as we feature Bright Whites for Summer Nights.
Just come on in, no reservations necessary!

Isaac Fernandez Biutiful Nature Brut NV $13.99
80% Macabeo and 20% Chardonnay

The Biutiful Cavas are produced at a winery created in 2007 utilizing the latest technology for the production of Cava. The vineyards are based in Requena; a region with a grape growing history dating back to the 7th century BCE. The region lies about 70 km West of the Mediterranean Sea and combines Mediterranean and Continental climatic influences. The winters are long and cold, getting down to near 0F. The summers are quite short punctuated by long, hot days with a cooling easterly wind in the afternoons/evenings. The elevation of the vineyards is between 700 and 900 meters and they grow Macabeo, Chardonnay and Garnacha.
This Cava is produced from some of their best grapes sourced from the Western portion of Requena from vineyards with a Northern orientation. While it could be labeled as a Reserva, as it spends 15 months on lees as opposed to the minimum of 9 months, we chose to simply label it as Cava. It is a Brut Nature, which is to say no sugar was added at the end of aging on lees. Residual Sugar: 1.1g/L
Idilico Albarino Yakima 2013 $14.99
Idilico Albarino showcases the characteristic aromas of this white varietal with floral notes, citrus and tropical fruit on the nose. The palate is incredibly sippable, though not delicate, with crisp acid and minerality mingled in with citrus notes. A recent sampling revealed the slightest hint of black licorice on the finish. An absolute perfect match for seafood this summer – oysters, clams, mussels, prawns and any kind of ceviche
Domaine de Couron Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2013 $12.99
"Bright and bracing, with fresh pippin apple, lime, mineral and floral notes that are light but persistent, with good cut through the lengthy finish." -winery
Domaine de Couron Cotes du Rhone Villages 2010 $12.99
"Rather ripe, offering blueberry and cherry confiture aromas and flavors, with a light toasty spice on the finish. A touch obvious but with delicious fruit"
Bodegas Silvano Garcia Vina Honda Monastrell 2012 $13.99
Vivid ruby. Pungent aromas of cherry, plum, espresso and candied licorice. Ripe dark plum and blackcurrant flavors show a touch of sweetness, with gentle acidity adding lift. In a ripe, emphatically fruity style, but I'd like just a bit more vivacity.
Cougar Crest Dedication Seven Walla Walla Red Blend 2010 $19.99
This medium ruby, medium-bodied is a blend of 50% Merlot, 29% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot.
Beautiful complex blend from Walla Walla. A very el

Few things better than entering a chilled, air conditioned space which has that sweet smell of wine being poured on a really, really warm day. See where I'm going here? That's what you'll have this Friday. And to top it off those very same wines taste even better than they smell and the prices are more than fair for these individualistic, distinctive, authentic beauties. What could be a better way to end a work week? Nada! As usual, as it always is with this theme, the wines are killer. Any questions regarding these wines will be gladly answered during the tasting so don't be shy. That's the way we learn about this fascinating subject...............ask, taste, ask, taste, read, taste, taste, taste. Not a bad way to spend your spare time.

Summertime Whites On Friday Night!!!!

“With the warm weather upon us, and apparently even warmer weather around the corner, we decided Friday night's tasting should be dedicated to cooling everyone off. With that said, we've got an amazing line-up of cool, white wines we'll be opening Friday from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. Darrell, from Lemma Distributing, will be pouring some classic summertime wines like Casal Garcia Vinho Verde, a crisp, zesty Txakolina, Vajra's Dragon Bianco and many more. There will definitely be something for everyone in this tasty line-up. Come by Friday between 5:30 - 7:30 pm for a great tasting. (Oh, and we have great A/C!!)

White Burgundy, aka “The World’s Greatest Chardonnay”!!

“Of all the Fridays NOT to schedule a big zin or Aussie red tasting, because, dang, wouldn’t some super big, thick, high octane reds sound good when the temp is popping over 90*? And yes, I see a whole bunch of you out there going “Now that you mention it those do sound good.” Well, sorry to you, but I am not only here to educate, but also to refresh and give you what I know you really need, even if you don’t quite realize it yet. Believe me, one taste of these amazing French whites, what I also call “real chardonnay”, and you’ll be happily swilling them with a not so guilty smile.

“Not since merlot was unfairly cursed by the movie “Sideways” has a grape fallen from favor like chardonnay. Blame the California “two-by-four and a pound of butter” style of chard for that. Meanwhile the Burgundians kept right on keeping on, producing profound, incredibly complex wines that were, except for the cognoscenti, being very underappreciated. Unobtrusive oak, minerality, wondrously complex flavors are de rigger. Now even most Cali producers have since seen the light, with oak becoming the background flavor of their chardonnay rather than their raison d’être.

‘So tomorrow is all about an appreciation of those who never strayed from the true path. Who continued to make chardonnay that is astonishingly food friendly and for the money cannot be beat, even if that thought goes against “Burgundy = vast expenditure” that most people have locked into their heads. I promise you’ll be thrilled with the wines we’re pouring at all price levels. From the southern Macon area up north to Chablis, this is a chardonnay tour de force not to be missed! To wit…

“appreciated Burgundy appellation where the wines are 100% sauvignon blanc and profoundly delicious. No one does it better that Mme. Davenne!
-2012 DOMAINE TALMARD Macon-Chardonnay $11.95
-2012 BERNARD MOREAU Bourgogne Blanc $16.95
-2012 BERNARD DEFAIX Petit Chablis $16.95
-2012 DOMAINE LAURENT GONDARD Viré-Clessé $21.95
And then the powerhouse whites show up….
-2009 SANGOUARD-GUYOT Pouilly Fuisse “Ancestral” $26.95
-2010 LA CHABLISIENNE Chablis “Les Venerables” $26.95…stunning for the $$!
-2009 JEAN-PIERRE GROSSOT Chablis 1er Cru “Mont de Milieu” $34.95…ridiculously beautiful Premier Cru chablis, drinking perfectly right now in all it’s rich, minerally glory!”
