Steadfast , thankful prayer

"Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving." Colossians 4:2

As I was clearing my e-mails today, I came across the reminder from my editor that it had been over two weeks since I posted a column here. It's not that I haven't had a lot to say, but I always need to be mindful of what I say, and how I say it. There are dozens of things on which I could make comment, or worse, launch into a tirade of fierce condemning words. The world we live in is a mess, and sometimes it's difficult to find things that are positive. After much dawdling, I finally surrendered my will, telling God I would write a column on the first Scripture I opened to from my devotional.

I laughed out loud when I read the one from Colossians.

It was as though God was bending low and whispering in my ear: "Don't give up child! Keep on praying over the things that trouble your soul. But remember to be vigilant in those prayers with thanksgiving."

You see, even though it's easy for me to pray about things, I'm not always diligent in praying with thanksgiving. When I fail to surround my prayers with genuine words of gratitude, I find I am guilty of coming before the throne with my "wish list" rather than with a heart that is truly grateful for the opportunity to come before Him.

It humbles me when He gently points out my spoiled and ungrateful behavior.

Having been reminded once again of how graciously He answers my prayers, I find my attitude has changed. My mind has been purged of the negative thoughts, and filled with the wonderful awareness of His presence and peace. Instead of coming before Him with an entitlement attitude of what I think He should do, I come with hands filled with praise for what He's already done. Once I have laid those praises at His feet, my hands are then ready to receive whatever He decides is best.

It's a good arrangement and always leaves me feeling satisfied and cherished.

May you find the same comfort as you pray.
