There are some interesting physical conditions that seem to be most prevalent in the spring of the year. One of these is called Spring Cleaning Hip. This malady can be easily avoided, if you understand the conditions that cause it.

Spring Cleaning Hip is characterized as an odd pain that radiates down one leg from the hip. Sometimes there is also pain to one side of the tailbone. The pain seems to suddenly appear the day after cleaning the house and usually gets worse before it gets better. Most people think it feels like a deep bruise, as if they fell hard on their side. Often the patient can’t think of anything that might have caused the pain.

This condition most often results from moving heavy furniture to clean. As the furniture is pushed back up against the wall the person bumps their hip into the furniture to snug the furniture back into a tight position against the wall. The odd angle of force results in a strain on the hip area. This strain is usually not severe or even painful. As the person continues to clean, the bending and stooping in odd angles contributes to the severity of the strain little by little. It is usually not until the next day that the person notices the pain. Regular daily activity may continue to strain the hip area making it difficult to heal the injured tissues.

This injury can obviously be prevented by not using dance moves to adjust furniture. If it is too heavy, get help, or at least use good body mechanics. If the pain is mild, Spring Cleaning Hip can be treated with rest and regular applications of heat as well as topical sports pain rubs to the hip area. Acupuncture and moxibustion can be very helpful in severe cases.
