It was with great fanfare when it was reported in August that a combined bowling center, indoor skateboarding area, arcade and lounge might open at Janss Marketplace in Thousand Oaks.
Now, there is considerable uncertainty about when the new center will begin operations – or even if it will.
The weekly Acorn newspaper had reported last year that a group of local entrepreneurs had been discussing with Janss Marketplace owner NewMark Merrill Companies for the past two years the prospect of a bowling center at the 17,000 square-foot former Linens ’n Things building.
But on Monday, a Janss Marketplace spokeswoman declined comment in an email about the status of the bowling center. She also declined to provide any details about the project.
The former Linens ’n Things building is now occupied by Padavo Home Furnishings. Representatives of Padavo and neighboring stores were tight-lipped about the bowling center.
But one thing is clear: Construction has not started.
“They have a lot of work to do,” said one neighborhood resident who has toured the area.
Still, this resident added: “There’s room [for a bowling center] if they want to take over all the back space.”
The Acorn reported last year that Dan DeBruno was planning a 20-lane bowling center at Janss Marketplace. DeBruno would operate the business with his childhood friends, the Acorn said.
But for now, a sign in front of Janss Marketplace proclaims that Nordstrom Rack will be “coming soon” to the mall.
There is no mention of a bowling center.
