Statues at a Catholic church are vandalized

The Buffalo News reported today that life sized statures of St. Mary, St. Joseph, and Jesus were vandalized and defaced by a "possible religious fanatic" at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, in Cheektowaga, NY. The vandal is reported to have caused about $21,000 worth of damage. The statue of St. Joseph, was shattered, the others suffered various degrees of damage. The statue of Jesus was knocked over and his face was knocked off. Mary was still standing but her face was chiseled off.

The vandal apparently left a two page note however, which police will use to track down that vandal. It was a diatribe against the "worship of false idols" and was filled with biblical quotations.

Parishoners and priests were shocked and dismayed by the actions of the vandal. The statues not only had monetary value but also had sentimental value.

Police are still looking for the vandals.
