Station Night Club Fire settlement: Federal judge signs order for $176 million

The Station Nightclub fire happened seven years ago on February 20, 2003. It was announced on Tuesday that the settlement money in the case will soon be paid out.

The Station, a nightclub located in West Warwick, RI. burned to the ground in 2003 and is considered to be the fourth deadliest nightclub fire in American history, killing 100 people.

The fire was caused when pyrotechnic sparks, set off during the headlining band Great White's performance. A flash fire filled the club in 5½ minutes. In a stampede to leave the burning club, 100 died, 230 people were injured and another 132 escaped uninjured.

A federal judge has signed an order requiring about $176 million to be deposited into a trust within the next three months. Dozens of people and companies involved in the fire, including foam manufacturers and the town of West Warwick, agreed to settle the case. Approximately one-third of the settlement amount will go to the lawyers handling the case.
