Everyone knows the power of a good, solid statement piece. It could be a leopard print scarf over a plain white tee, a bright pair of flats with skinny jeans, or even a Royal Wedding inspired headpiece to balance out something dull; but the trendiest and questionably trickiest way to add va-va-voom to any outfit is by accessorizing with a bold piece of jewelry.
As we reach the peak of winter, fashionistas everywhere are being forced to take comfort into consideration and tone things down. This season, I’ve seen a lot of black and gray, and our greatest accessory this season has become leather gloves and velvet cloches. Some have even felt the need to indulge in oversized sweaters and knit leggings, and even though those are highly acceptable, it’s time to add some sparkle to dismal season.
For those of you who aren’t “jewelry people,” I highly suggest giving it one more try.
When wearing a basic Saturday jeans-and-a-tee outfit, try dressing it up with a long chain necklace with a dramatic pendant, or dare to go bold with a uniquely crafted neckpiece with intricate detail. Stores like Betsey Johnson and Nordstrom are famous for their statement jewelry, so splurge of a lavish necklace to go from drab to fab. For LBD’s or trendy cocktail dresses, try putting on the outfits finishing touches with a something dainty, and pearls never go out of style. So instead of wearing the dull Mad Men inspired choker pearls, try a super long strand and loop it around your neck a few times to add a modern twist to a classic trend. A necklace is always appropriate no matter what the occasion, so choose one that reflects who you are, and dare to wear one that reflects who you want to be.
One accessory that needs to make a comeback is a pair of bold, Edie Sedgwick inspired earrings. As the feather trend dies down, chandelier earrings are back and here to stay. Bebe offers romantic yet sexy crystal linear pairs for as low as $13.99, so try a pair with a sleek up-do to channel the 1960s era. Theatricality can be tough to pull off at the risk of looking tacky, so they look best with something casual and relaxed. Always remember than when it comes to jewelry, you have to choose between dramatic earrings and a dramatic necklace---it’s called a statement piece for a reason!
This cold weather may have you in a funk, so there is nothing wrong with simplifying your clothes and wearing neutrals for the remainder of this winter. Adding that one special piece of jewelry however, will make even a cashmere blanket look couture. So go ahead and be a little lazy, I won’t tell---as long as you make up for it when the springtime rolls around!
