Your first statewide non-profit health insurance co-op, Colorado HealthOP announced they will be offering several progressive programs which will give us, the consumers, a bigger choice for and more control over our healthcare needs and costs. These programs, five of them, will help us to become healthier and hopefully avoid excessive healthcare spending, without them profiting on us.
Jack Westfall, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of Colorado HealthOP, is noted as saying; “Because Colorado HealthOP reports to members, not shareholders, investing in members’ long-term health – not short-term profits – is a priority. By investing in preventive care and giving members more choices, we will not only improve members’ health, but also hope to save them more money now and in the future.”
Preventive care, healthy choices, remaining healthy and savings is what HealthOP is trying to emphasize with their programs.
HealthOP’s plans are going to reward their members when they stay healthy by paying less out of our pockets with visits and earn money back when we use our debit cards to pay for expenses involving our healthcare.
They are going to partner with physicians who believe in their mission and charge us less when we choose plans with limited networks keeping the costs down.
Children today are suffering from chronic tooth decay, which is their most common chronic illness. With this being said most healthcare plans to not cover our infants and toddlers oral care, even though it is offered by our primary care providers. The HealthOP will pay for four oral health visits which will include fluoride varnishing, for covered children between the ages of 6 months and 4 years. Colorado HealthOP will also be partnering with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environments’ Program Cavity Free at Three, to help train our primary care physicians to provide our infants dental care.
For Coloradoans with high blood pressure at home monitoring is recommended by The American Heart Association. With this being said the HealthOP will be paying 100 percent of the costs associated with this home monitoring. Patients will be able to monitor their blood pressure at home and report it to their doctor online. This will not only provide peace of mind for the patient, but it will give the physicians a better picture of their patients’ health, without having to schedule numerous costly visits to get the readings and to monitor them. They will also be paying our primary care providers annual fees, which will cover the home monitoring plan.
The HealthOP will be allowing us to price shop for services, just like we do most other purchases in our lives, which will give us the opportunity to compare all of the costs for the providers performing necessary procedures.
Dr. Westfall is also noted as saying “Colorado HealthOP is not just a health insurance company; we partner with our members and their providers. We believe that the role of health insurance extends beyond covering people when they’re sick or injured; we want to support our members’ health, nutrition and fitness, and help them be more informed consumers of healthcare services.”
