State Fair of Texas offers music, arts and fried beer

Big Tex is standing proud, ready to welcome visitors to the 2010 State Fair of Texas.

There is something for everyone at this year’s state fair, from pig races to a wine garden. The Chevrolet Main Stage headliners include Mat Kearney, Pointer Sisters and Brooke White. Foodies can get pointers from Central 214’s Blythe Beck, Nobu’s Mat Raso and The Green Room’s Joel Harloff at the Celebrity Kitchen in the Creative Arts Building.

Let's face it, the fried food is a big draw for many visitors. Try Fried Beer, this year's winner for most creative, or Texas Fried FRITOS Pie, this year's best taste winner. Previous winners such as deep fried latte and chicken fried bacon are also on the menu.

The fair is held in Dallas’s 277-acre Fair Park and is open Sept. 24 through Oct. 17, 2010. Exhibits are open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Monday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $11 for seniors. Parking in State Fair lots is $15 per space. The fair’s Starlight Parade, featuring puppets and floats, travels through the park at 7:15 p.m. After the parade, be sure to check out the Illumination Sensation light show at 8 p.m.

Insider tips: Discounted general admission tickets are available in Kroger stores, where shoppers can also buy DART/Fair Combo tickets. State Fair admission is free for seniors every Thursday for Senior Citizen Day. Visitors can save on parking by taking the DART rail to nearby stations.
