On Tuesday, Starz announced the date of the premiere for the network's final season of the highly acclaimed and highly popular "Spartacus" series.

This season - the third for the series which covers, fictionally, the life of the gladiator - is dubbed "Spartacus: War of the Damned." The series will return on Friday, January 25, 2013 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

In addition, Starz released a preview video to warm viewers up for the season. Due to embedding issues, that video can be viewed here.

"Spartacus: War of the Damned" is the final season of the series. It takes place after the defeat of Roman commander Gaius Claudius Glaber, which took place in season two, "Spartacus: Vengeance." The first season of the series, "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," starred Andy Whitfield as the gladiator, but he died on Sept. 11, 2011 of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He was replaced by Liam McIntyre.

A number of series regulars died in the season two finale, including Oenomaus and Mira.

In the time since the end of the Battle of Vesuvius, Spartacus and his men have amassed major victories against the Romans. These swelled the ranked of the freed slaves to more than 30,000. However, those familiar with history know things will not turn out well for Spartacus and his group.

"Spartacus: War of the Damned" sees the return of stars Liam McIntyre (Spartacus), Manu Bennett (Crixus), Dustin Clare (Gannicus), Dan Feuerriegel (Agron), Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Naevia) and Ellen Hollman (Saxa).

For the final season, Todd Lasance joins the cast as Gaius Julius Caesar, along with Simon Merrells, who will play Marcus Crassus and Anna Hutchison as Laeta.
