Starting a liturgical dance ministry

Dance ministries in the church, what is that all about? How do I start a dance ministry? By now, many dance ministries have been launched, right? Perhaps you might feel the Lord calling you to dance for him but might need some encouragement.

I started dancing for God in the 90s. I had taken a dance class in high school but I only learned some fundamental dance steps. The type of dance I was drawn to at that time was reggae. Yes, I loved to twist my body in all types of dance positions. I would dance everywhere! I did not care, and those movements were extremely suggestive, but then God inspired me to dance for him.

You see, if it is God’s will for you to dance for him, he will place that desire in your heart, and it does not matter if you have had formal training or not. The Lord will show you how to develop in dance.

Sometimes we let society dictates to us what is acceptable and unacceptable, what is impeccable and what is inadequate. For instance, the types of dance movements that some praise dancers use to minister to God might be belittled by some dancers who have been trained in ballet (or other dance genres).

This is why I love First Corinthians 1:27, which reads, “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.”

When I first started dancing, I just relied on God (and I still do). I allowed him to give me the ideas and the movements, and people have been blessed by the ministry that God placed in my heart.

This actually reminds me of David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17). Who would have thought a young boy named David would have killed a giant with a stone? If God has called you to dance, he will show you how your ministry should function.

Several years ago, I saw this dance team minister through dance. The anointing was evident as they danced. And guess what, they were doing simple dance movements (lifting their hands in the air), nothing complicated. Remember, you could dance skillfully but if the power of God is absent, then you will be just another performer, not a minister of the Gospel.

The whole point of a dance ministry is to bless the heart of God and to allow him to use you to release deliverance, love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (the fruit of the Spirit). It is not for people to see how great you are but for them to see How Great Thou Art.

Dance Scriptures

  • "Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might..." (2 Samuel 6:14).
  • "Praise him with the timbrel and dance" (Psalm 150:4).
  • "You have turned my mourning into dancing for me; You have put off my sackcloth and girded me with gladness..." (Psalm 30:11).

Dear Heavenly Father, we praise your holy name. You are majestic and we love you. You are an awesome God who has given us gifts that we can use to win souls for you. Father, I believe you are giving the dancers ears to hear your voice. I also believe you are blessing us with heavenly ideas that we can integrate into our dances to bring forth deliverance to your people. In the name of Jesus, amen.
