The 42-kilometer run is, of course, the big dream. That's 42.195 kilometers for the exact or 26.2 miles to be exact.
To many, it will remain a dream and to some, they won't even dare dream about it. However, there is something LA offers that is a bit more conceivable and achievable, the "LA Big 5K."
The "LA Big 5K" is actually the warm up run of the annual ASICS LA Marathon happening the very next day. To many, it's the first stage towards the big marathon dream which ideally requires a year of preparation. You don't need to register to the "ASICS LA Marathon" to participate, you just need to be willing to wake up early and pay the $40 registration fee. It comes with a free bib and shirt.
You also don't need to dedicate the next year of your life to a grueling training program to finish the 26.2 the next year if you don't wan to. You just need to start running and be committed enough to run a little longer every two weeks. Before you know it, you'll find yourself running twice longer than when you started and 20% faster. It's just how the body works. It's programmed to get better at something once it learns how to do it.
Do it for your health and do it for the sheer privilege of allowing your 2014 self bragging to your 2013 self just how awesome you have become in just a year.
