For high school students interested in starting (or finishing) their college search, this fall offers several opportunities to visit some great college options here in our own back yard in the Inland Northwest. We are fortunate to have five four-year universities within a two-hour drive of Spokane, not including the ever-growing WSU/EWU Riverpoint Campus. The variety of educational choices includes public, private, religious affiliated, comprehensive research institutions and liberal arts colleges. Each university offers several opportunities for fall visit programs that are free and open to students and families which will give students a taste of the campus experience.
Gonzaga University offers two Preview Days this fall – October 18th and November 8th. During these events students can spend a day on campus and visit with current students, faculty and staff. Pre-registration is required and can be completed on their website where details of the day’s events are also listed.
Whitworth University offers numerous “Why Whitworth” days during the fall and spring semesters. These events are offered on select Fridays allowing students to tour campus, visit classes and interact with Whitworth students and faculty. On October 13-14, 2013 a special two-day, one-night option for seniors called “Snapshot” allows current high school seniors and parents to get an in-depth campus experience. Students must pre-registration for both types of campus visits.
A short drive outside of Spokane is Eastern Washington University, located in Cheney, Washington. EWU hosts two open house events in October, welcoming students and families with opportunities to learn more about the Eastern experience. Students can choose November 7-8 or November 17-18 to spend the night on campus during Eagle Preview. For other dates and to register for an event check out the EWU Open House page.
Less than two hours from Spokane students can visit both Washington State University in Pullman, Washington and a few minutes away the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho. WSU offers Fall Preview Days for seniors and their families as well as Game Day tours. October 5 is the Fall Preview Day targeted towards students interested in health-related careers. Other dates include October 19, 26 and November 9. Game Day tours are offered during three fall home game dates, one each in September, October and November. Students can register for all these events on their visit website.
Down the road from WSU students can visit the home of the Vandals, University of Idaho. There are two visit days “Envision Idaho” this fall, October 4 or November 1. These events are targeted to high school seniors, transfers and parents to give them an in-depth look at an Idaho experience. Sophomores and juniors are invited to “Idaho Sneak Peek” on April 25, 2014. For more information or to register for Idaho visit events check out their visit page.
There are several days this fall when students get a day off from school which provides a perfect opportunity to visit the great educational options close to home.
