Start the school year off on the right foot

The school year has begun already here in Nashville. Help your student start the year off right with these important tips.

  1. Set a schedule - and stick to it. Kids thrive on routine. It makes them feel secure to know what is expected of them. Set a schedule for homework and bedtime, and keep to it. Not only will it help make sure homework gets done, but you'll probably find that you fight less too. Wouldn't that be nice?
  2. Set up a homework area. Every kid works best in a different environment. Some do fine working unsupervised in the quiet bedrooms. Some need constant supervision, or even a bit more noise, to make sure homework gets done. Wherever your child works best, make sure they have all the materials they may need to complete their work. A supplies box eliminates wasted time looking (or pretending to look) for materials.
  3. Get in touch - and stay in touch - with your child's teacher. Your child will succeed best when it's a community effort. Keep these rules in mind though. Don't pop in unexpectedly and expect the teacher to have the time, and the information you need. Do make an appointment. Don't hound your child's teacher repeatedly. Do remember they have many other students, and parents, to care for.

How do you help make sure your child starts the school year off right?
