Start the New Year on a fashionable foot (Photos)

Each New Year brings new looks to the style set and 2013 is already promising some major trend setters. Our favorite designers have spent nearly six months creating. It’s time for us to enjoy the oh-so-delicious fruits of their labor. Now that the mini dresses and glitter stilettos of New Year’s Eve have come and gone (thank goodness, with the Portland weather!), we can focus proper attention on the fabulous frocks of spring ‘13.

From the high contrast looks at Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang to the power suits featured at Christian Dior and Balmain, we are looking at a new year designed for the alpha woman. Represent Portland women in a bold way with tailored lapels and daring darts. 2013 is all about embracing confidence, overcoming challenges, and showing the world who’s boss (you!).

While 2013 has plenty of Dior for the dominatrix, designers showed another side to strength—femininity. Roberto Cavalli and a slew of others sent light, airy designs of organza and silk chiffon down the catwalk. While some designers like Akris balanced out the featherweight fabric through dark design, others like Donna Karan played off of the feminine vibe with pastels and beadwork. Together, they form a trend that can adapt to the individual woman. While the fabrics aren't ideal in a state that's perpetually rainy, these luxurious looks might be just enough of an excuse to break out the umbrella (gasp!).

Finally, designers dabbed their fingers in Asian culture to inspire looks tailored to the free spirit, extending brocades and tassels outside of China Town. From Haider Ackerman’s “kung fu” couture to Lanvin’s clean-cut kimono (or a slight variation, at least), catwalks flaunted pieces that were powerful enough for the modern woman, while providing a unique and innovative perspective on the New Year.

The designers have spoken. It’s time to pick your poison and start the New Year off with a bang. Intoxicate the world with a new look, a new attitude, and a new you. Happy New Year, stylisitas!
