Start the New Year at the grand opening of a new milonga

Go for 1940s or 1950s glamour and dance the sultry Argentine tango this Friday, January 11, at the grand opening of Milonga LUNA in Studio City. The evening features a pre-milonga workshop and a mid-milonga performance by "So You Think You Can Dance" choreographers Miriam Larici and Leonardo Barrionuevo.

How hot will the night be? It will be read hot because it's at the Red Hot Ballroom at 12745 Ventura Blvd., in Studio City. The DJ for the evening is Lampis.

The class begins at 8:30 p.m. and goes until 9:30 p.m. Miriam Larici and Leonardo Barrionuevo will be teaching social dancing sacadas, paradas and embellishments. From 9:30 p.m., until 2:30 p.m. is the milonga. If you can't make the class, be sure to be there for the 11:30 p.m. performance by Miriam Larici and Leonardo Barrionuevo. The cost of the class and the milonga is $25 per person and for the milonga only is $20.

Hosted by Yuliana Basmajyan, she will offer a buffet of Mediterranean cuisine.

Don't worry about parking; there's plenty of parking available. Red Hot Ballroom is located in a plaza next to Shiki Restaurant.

If your not familiar with the Argentine tango community, expect excellence at this milonga. Yuliana Basmajyan and her partner Brian Nguyen won the salon dancing category at the 2011 USA Championships. They are not only one of the top salon tango couples in the United States, but also internationally as well. They also teach classes.

This weekend, Basmajyan and Nguyen are giving a workshop that weekend for people preparing for this year's championships. The advanced Argentine tango workshop, "Advanced Tango Traditions: Dancing the Great Figures" will be held at Oxygen Tango from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday (12-13 January). The focus will be on exploring classic figures within specific orchestras or songs in order to build confidence, versatility, and partnering skills. The full weekend workshop costs $108 for both days or $58 for one day. Each day includes a one hour coached practica.

This year's championships will be held on March 28-31, 2013 at the San Francisco Marriott Hotel. The winners of the championships go on to compete in Buenos Aires at the Tango Buenos Aires Festival and Dance World Cup, representing the U.S.A. Basmajyan and Nguyen placed third in 2011.

The San Francisco festival also offers the perfect opportunity to watch our best tango dancers and have workshops and private lessons with top international dancers.

But for this weekend, check out the grand opening of a milonga that promises elegance and some of Los Angeles' best Argentine tango dancers. If you're a shoe lover, besides dancing, the milonga will feature Yolanda Rossi's Comme Il Faut shoe collection on sale. What dancer doesn't need another pair of shoes?

Red Hot Ballroom also offers Argentine tango classes on Tuesdays and Thursday and already has a regular salsa party on Saturdays so you know the venue is ready for a party. So find your inner Old Hollywood screen idol persona and dance the Argentine tango with more flair than Rudolph Valentino at Milonga LUNA.
