Apocalypse seems to be the current zeitgeist on network and cable television, a reflection, perhaps, of a global anxiety caused by consecutive disasters from hurricanes to tsunamis and earthquakes and daily warnings about the shrinking glaciers and rising sea levels. Global pandemics have been in vogue with Hollywood, on the big screen, with films like "Contagion" and "World War Z", and the small, with the AMC network's juggernaut "The Walking Dead" leading a pack that includes SyFy's "Helix", about a group of CDC scientists desperately trying to find a cure for a diabolically manufactured global mass plague, HBO's upcoming "The Leftovers" and Guillermo del Toro's "The Strain", about a vampire epidemic, soon to debut on the FX network. Joining the lineup tonight on TNT is "The Last Ship", from Executive Producer Michael Bay, the maestro of serious destruction and mayhem.

Premiering tonight, Sunday, June 22nd, at 9 pm (ET/PT), "The Last Ship" opens with a global catastrophe that nearly decimates the world's population. Because of its positioning, the Navy destroyer U.S.S. Nathan James avoids falling victim to the devastating tragedy. But now the crew and its captain must confront the reality of their new existence in a world where they may be among the few remaining survivors. Eric Dane (Grey's Anatomy) stars as Captain Tom Chandler, a career Navy man who is authoritative and decisive, but also fair and courageous. A born leader and a loving father and husband, Chandler is respected and loved by the men and women under his command. Rhona Mitra (Strike Back) also stars as Rachel Scott, a strong-willed, intelligent and fearless paleomicrobiologist assigned to the Nathan James to investigate the cause of billions of deaths worldwide.

TNT curated an exclusive evening of masked art and fashion to celebrate the premiere of the network's new post-apocalyptic drama at DIA 545 on West 22nd Street in New York City on Thursday night. "Survival Is An Art: The Last Ship Experience" presented a runway show of 20 one-of-a-kind designs of Munich-based couture designer, Irene Luft, and a gallery exhibition of original gas masks by artists Tom Banwell, Bob Basset, Singer Blake, Wren Britton, Gary Lockwood and Nathan Vincent.

Dane and Mitra introduced the show, with Dane commenting to the audience that he never imagined the show he worked on would inspire such an amazing example of creativity and originality. He and Mitra sat front row for the show, and joined Luft in a standing ovation with all the models assembled in their gowns and elaborately fabricated gas masks. The sight of sylph-like models in elegant and daring designs, wearing the sinister yet kind of alluring masks was jarring and thrilling at the same time. It is comforting to think that humanity will find a way to look fabulous and fashionable in the face of global apocalypse.

Catch "The Last Ship" Sunday nights at 9 pm on TNT.
