Stars of ‘Downton Abbey’ stops by ‘GMA’ to give a peek into season 4

In just a few short weeks, American fans will finally get to see all of the happenings on their favorite show, “Downton Abbey.” As reported by ABC News on Dec. 10, the stars of the hit PBS series stopped by the set of “Good Morning America” this morning to discuss the upcoming season.

It was like a British invasion in New York City with actors Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary), Allen Leech (Tom Branson), Hugh Bonneville (Lord Crawley), Lesley Nicol (Mrs. Patmore), Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith), Phyllis Logan (Mrs. Hughes), and Rob-James Collier( Thomas), along with creator Julian Fellowes, as they sat down with "GMA" co-host Lara Spencer. Of course, the first thing that was asked was about the untimely death of Matthew (Dan Stevens).

Fellowes explained that British actors have a three year contract. “When people want to leave, they leave,” he stated. “That was the way it had to be.”

When asked how Lady Mary was going to be dealing with her husband’s death, Dockery responded that her character will be cold and icy, having to deal with her grief and bringing up the baby by herself. Of course, Lady Mary will have a few men knocking on her door to help her adjust to her difficult situation.

Carmichael dished that her character of Lady Edith gets to escape to the modern world in London to live her own life outside of “Downton Abbey.” She has had her heart broken a few times, being left at the altar and all, so she is ready to find love once again. But will she find more than she bargained for?

Bonneville said that his character has also had to adjust to the death of Matthew and to deal with Mary’s grief. It seems that the whole household has their own ideas on how to handle the situation at hand. He also said that Lord Crawley will set out to protect Matthew’s heir, the son that he never got a chance to spend time with.

Leech dished that his character on the show has been through what Lady Mary is dealing with, so he is the only one that can truly relate to her. He lost his wife and Mary’s sister, Lady Sybil, and is now a single dad raising their daughter alone. It seems that maybe the two might form a special kindred friendship in the process, but it doesn’t look romantic at all. Will he find another love in season four?

Nothing much was said about the downstairs quarters so fans will just have to wait and see what will develop with Mr. and Mrs. Bates and the rest of the gang. The trailer is out and it looks to be quite an exciting season full of tears, love, and plenty of new characters to satisfy any "Downton Abbey" fan.

“Downton Abbey” premieres on Jan. 5 at 9 p.m. EST as part of Masterpiece Classic on PBS.
