Stars fall 3-2 in a shootout to Buffalo Sabres

The Stars unbeaten streak of leading after two periods came to end as they lost 3-2 to the Buffalo Sabres in a shootout. Derek Roy tied the game with 39 seconds remaining, sending the game to a shootout, which Buffalo won 2-1 on Nathan Gerbe’s backhand goal that clanged in off the right post.

The Stars dropped to 15-0-1 when leading after two periods and in an effort to gain their first win in the second game of a back-to-back, the Stars decided to start Kari Lehtonen, who made 30 saves on the night, instead of Richard Bachman, who was scheduled to start but the coaching staff made a late change to hopefully get the Stars off the schnide. With the loss, they fell to 0-8-2 on the second game of a back-to-back.

The Stars looked to have their first of the season, but in the final minute of the game, Buffalo won a faceoff back to defensemen Tyler Myers, whose slap shot rebounded of Lehtonen to Derek Roy, who hammered the rebound past Lehtonen’s outstretched glove for the game-tying goal.

In the shootout, Sabres winger Brad Boyes scored first for the Sabres and Jamie Benn scored for the Stars. Gerbe’s backhander forced Michael Ryder to answer for the Stars, but his attempt to beat Miller high, glove side went high as the Stars remained winless against the Sabres since Brett Hull won the Stanley Cup in 1999.

The Stars built a 2-0 lead 4:17 into the third period on a strong forecheck by  Steve Ott, who chipped the puck to Benn along the boards and Benn centered to the driving Tomas Vincour, who beat Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller five-hole.

Goligoski’s power play shot from the left point on the deflected off Ryder in front, as the rising deflection beat Miller high, glove side to give the Stars a 1-0 lead.

Lehtonen’s glove save on Drew Staford kept it scoreless as Buffalo attempted to answer Dallas’ power play goal with one of their own.

They finally broke through when Thomas Vanek  out-positioned Stephane Robidas in the slot and deflected a pass past the right pad of Lehtonen to bring the Sabres to within a goal.
