Some may not even be aware of the shooter, in terms of drinks it is a very recent cocktail. Dekuyper themselves do not even list the cocktail on their website, for obvious reasons, but its not even listed under a different name. So what happened here? It's agreed that most modern drinks were printed on the back label, dekuyper being particularly notorious for this. There is no evidence to suggest this drink was ever printed on the back label of watermelon pucker.
So if the liquor distributor did not create this drink, who did? I think the focus on "who" created a particular cocktail is far less important that "what" created the cocktail. In this case, like many others is was a popular band. We all know drinks can be named after actors and actresses (charlie chapman, douglas fairbanks, mary pickford) or sports figures like (jamaican ten speed) or just like in this case music (zombie, alexander, naked pretzel).
It appears "Starf***er" the indie electronica band is indirectly responsible for this cocktail. The band hails from portland oregan and started in 2007. To no surprise the shooter also first appears to be published as early as august 12th 2007, however, there is no hard cover literature in reference to this cocktail. Thats no shocker either, in terms of drinks, this cocktail is very new.
There are lots of bands out there, what makes this one so special to get a drink named after them. Well there is one major factor that seems to be not only the main driving force behind this bands popularity but also the exact and only reason there is even a shooter by this name. Shortly after the band started a tour, the song "holly" was used in an IBM commercial. The same advertising agency who made the commercial were located in Portland, and so sometime after this moment, the Starf***er shooter was born.
