Starbucks has partnered with philanthropist and media mogul Oprah Winfrey for the newest tea flavor distributed by the coffee chain's Teavana brand, which launched Tuesday in Starbucks and Teavana stores in the U.S. and Canada. Teavana® Oprah Chai Tea will be available as a latte beverage or brewed tea in select Starbucks stores, and packaged for home brewing at Starbucks and Teavana stores. Oprah Winfrey, a tea enthusiast, worked with Teavana's leading teaologist to blend black tea and rooibos with cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and cloves. In addition to tea beverages and loose leaf teas, Starbucks and Teavana stores will sell packaged tea gift sets which include a glass teapot with stainless steel mesh strainer.
The new tea will also support the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation. Twenty-five cents from the sale of beverages and up to four dollars from the sale of loose leaf tea and tea sets will benefit the foundation. “For years I have been steeping my own tea as part of my morning ritual, and I am very excited that starting today, Teavana Oprah Chai is available in Starbucks and Teavana stores across the country,” said Oprah Winfrey in the Starbucks media release. “This new partnership came from an organic space as the mission of our two companies are naturally aligned – we both want to inspire and nurture the human spirit. The best part is, a donation from every sale will go to support youth education starting today.”
While Teavana had previously focused on retail sales of loose leaf teas, Starbucks also announced the opening of the Teavana Fine Teas + Tea Bar in Chicago, which will offer beverages, tea-inspired foods and tea merchandise. Locations in New York City and Los Angeles are in the works, and will also feature the Oprah Chai Tea. In addition to multiple Starbucks locations, there are seven Teavana stores in North Texas, in Dallas, Ft. Worth, Plano, Frisco, Arlington, and Hurst.
