The nominees for the 88th Academy Awards have been unveiled, and while ‘The Revenant’ leads the way with a total of 12 nominations followed by ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ with ten nominations, there is still buzz over ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ earning five Oscar nominations. After missing out on Golden Globe nominations for its late release, the J.J. Abrams directed sci-fi is well represented among Oscar hopefuls.
The Box Office sensation was recognized for best sound editing, sound mixing, visual effects, original score (for legendary composer John Williams) and film editing. ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ has become the highest-grossing movie of all time in the U.S. and is now the third-highest grossing movie of all time globally. However, the film did not receive any nominations for acting, directing or Best Picture.
Those up for Best Picture include ‘The Revenant,’ ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ ‘The Big Short,’ ‘Bridge of Spies,’ ‘Brooklyn,’ ‘The Martian,’ ‘Room’ and ‘Spotlight.’ In the Best Actor category, Leonardo DiCaprio received his sixth career Oscar nomination, this time for ‘The Revenant,’ and he’s up against Brian Cranston for ‘Trubmo,’ Matt Damon for ‘The Martian,’ Michael Fassbender for ‘Steve Jobs’ and Eddie Redmayne for ‘The Danish Girl.’ Jennifer Lawrence is an Oscar nominee for the fourth time as she vies for her second win in the Best Actress category for 'Joy', facing off against Cate Blanchett for ‘Carol,’ Brie Larson for ‘Room,’ Charlotte Rampling for ‘45 Years’ and Saorise Ronan for ‘Brooklyn.’ For the complete list of nominees click TMN. Chris Rock will host the Oscars Feb. 28 live on ABC.
