After weeks of speculation and anticipation, Cryptic Studios today announced the first expansion of Star Trek Online, entitled Legacy of Romulus. Launching May 21, Legacy of Romulus includes many new features and content additions, including an entirely new playable faction.
Once Legacy of Romulus launches, Star Trek Online players will be able to create captains belonging to the new Romulan Republic faction. This faction consists of survivors of the destruction of the Romulan homeworld (as seen in J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek). The new expansion promises enough content to level a Romulan character from 1-50, mirroring the existing Federation faction. The Romulan faction will have its own armada of ships as well, of course.
Star Trek The Next Generation actress Denise Crosby will reprise her role of the TV show's Empress Sela, providing voice acting for the head of the old Romulan Empire. Sela was the daughter of Crosby's Starfleet character, Tasha Yar, and a Romulan official and promises to play an important part in the new storyline in Legacy of Romulus.
In addition to the new faction and its storyline, Legacy of Romulus features a number of other features and improvements, including:
- Tholian reputation, a new faction reputation with rewards and benefits
- New and improved traits, including new ways to customize captains and crew
- Improved UI, including the ability to choose from various color palettes
- The ability to start at level 1 with any faction
