After 3 years of ups and downs for the players of Star Trek™ Online; their first official expansion was announced today. Legacy of Romulus is currently scheduled for release on May 21st, 2013 and their official site detailing all it will include can be found here: http://sto.perfectworld.com/legacyofromulus
New features being added from this expansion will include the following incentives; playing as a Romulan, Romulan Warbird class star ships, the ability to start the game as any of the 3 factions available, more insight into the Romulan lore within the Star Trek ™ universe, a Tholian reputation system, advancements to the traits system, and user interface improvements.
While announcements have been trickled down within their community for the actual release of this new expansion; as of today the date for release has been set and many a player now has clarity on the reason their servers have been down so frequently as of lately has surfaced. With as impressive as this game has managed to become over the past 3 years, they have not at all stopped in their tradition of satisfying their gamers.
Now whether new or old to the game, after the Legacy of Romulus is live any player can start a character new under any of the 3 factions that will exist. Currently in order to play the Klingon faction of the game, a player has to first level up to 25 on a federation affiliated character. As hindering as this may have seemed for some players, once a Klingon could be created they would immediately have the skill points of a level 20 player. Ideally this sped them past any initial learning quests that were exclusive to the Federation, but taught players the basics for each element the game has to offer. Imaginably both the Klingon and Romulan factions will have their own flavors of such quests instated, once this expansion goes live.
Probably most exciting to all the players of STO, is the fact that they have followed in the traditional generosity of their game; while other MMO's on the market make it explicitly clear that the purchase is necessary to take part in any expansion offered, there is no mention from STO of cost or additional fees. That doesn't exonerate the reality that there are likely to be some overheads whether in the form of Zen ™ coins from their money market, or otherwise, but after 3 years running prior to a first expansion being released; the anticipation and excitement of this announcement are without question.
