Star Trek and Star Wars technologies are on the burner according to the video provided to the Examiner on or about Oct. 10, 2013. The "Now This News" video makes mention of "teleportation" and "light saber technologies" now in development. Of course, advanced technologies like these might just be in experimental stages - "on the burner" so to speak.
Skipping to the Star Trek style teleportation work on the burner one finds the teleportation of atoms. The work has been done by the U. S. and Austria teams working together. Since the "Now This" video is woefully short of information on the references a large scale search was conducted for that study. Instead, two other studies/reports were located. One of these was in Physical Review Letters and the other in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
The earlier of the two studies (from PNAS) is more about the "teleportation" of photonic information between atoms of Rubidium. Those atoms had to be cooled to almost absolute zero. The later study (PRL) is more about the "teleportation" of quantum information between two atoms. Rubidium atoms were used again. It is difficult to see how these scientific studies take us closer to the Star Trek style transporters. However, they have achieved some major scientific objectives in teleportation.
The Star Wars light saber work on the burner may refer to the very recent and exciting development of "photonic crystals". The photonic crystals are indeed a new state of matter and are the result of work between MIT and Harvard. The creation begins with a cloud of ultra-cold atoms - here we find Rubidium is the atom of choice again. A laser pumped single photons into the cloud - which forced the atoms to stick with each other. The photons were then found to pair with each other - something not normally seen in nature. A molecule (or crystal) of photons is created out of it all.
The claims that could be made are that this all gets the development of Star Trek transporter and Star Wars light saber technologies on the burner. However, it will be a long process to develop full-scale teleportation and light saber devices from those cold Rubidium atoms.
