Turner Classic Movies (TCM) this October has made iconic actor Vincent Price “Star of the Month;” presenting 35 films he made that his fans, like myself, don’t mind seeing again and again. Each Thursday night beginning at 8 TCM brings to the screen films Price made; some known to viewers, others watching for the first time. TCM describes Vincent Price as “his aristocratic looks, cultivated manner and silken speaking voice served Vincent Price well through a series of careers as leading man, character actor and, in his best-remembered persona, horror film star.” Price was indeed a man of culture, coming from a wealthy family and majoring in art history and English as a Yale graduate.
Being remembered as a horror film star comes into play tonight when nine films will be shown with Price at his best. The flicks presented are:
House of Wax (1953) 8-9:45. A fire-scarred sculptor uses horrible methods to restore the marvelous wax creations his crippled hands cannot.
The Mad Magician (1954) 9:45-11. An 1880’s magician creates illusions of mayhem that work.
House of Usher (1960) 11-12:30 a.m. Insane aristocrat Roderick Usher, thinking his sister is dead, buries her alive.
Diary of a Madman (1963) 12:30-2:15 a.m. A 19th century French judge acquires a condemned man’s urge and butchers a canary and a model.
The Tingler (1959) 2:15-3:45 a.m. A pathologist discovers that people die of fright because of an organism on the spinal cord.
House on Haunted Hill (1958) 3:45-5:15 a.m. The owner of a haunted mansion offers a group of people reward money if they can survive a night at his scary estate.
