After more angry outbursts and accusations than Kate and Jon Gosselin, the ladies of The View and Star Jones have made peace. Sort of. Still an issue: the "oops, it was weight loss surgery, not Pilates and portion control" facts about her weight loss that Star attempted to keep a secret for so long. (Star initially insisted that dieting, not surgery, had resulted in her dramatic slimdown.)
As to why she decided to come clean about her gastric bypass and return to The View with "pals" like Elisabeth Hasselbeck? Star said she wants to raise awareness of obesity's dangers. "I was morbidly obese," she says now, and it took a toll on her health to the point where: "My greatest fear was that I would die in my apartment alone from a stroke or a heart attack – too big to get to the phone. And I made up my mind that whatever it took, I was gonna lose that weight." As with Al Roker, it took gastric bypass, an involved and complex operation.
Star attempted to explain the reason for her silence to Today's show host Matt Lauer: "I’m not sure I thought I would be successful at it, to be honest with you. I thought I’d gain the weight back. I had never been successful at losing weight before. I needed to forgive myself for being such a smart girl and so stupid when it came to something like my health."
