Star Fights: The Welter War Edition

WBC welterweight champ Floyd Mayweather, who as of yet has not announced his next opponent in May 2014, has made it clear that he does not want to face Manny Pacquiao, recently installed as his #1 contender by the governing body.

I believe they will fight, in September 2014 to be exact, and that this is another show of gamesmanship. The former “Pretty Boy Floyd” is flirting with the idea of dropping the “Money” moniker in exchange for a new one.

He might want to consider “Batman”. He has a legion of fans who regard him as a superhero, and has a gaudy belt collection to go along with a plethora of tricks. I’m just not sure that the “caped crusader” would even consider giving up his favorite one to avoid his own Filipino version of “Bain”.

He won’t- I have to believe that.

By the time Mayweather fights again, Pacquiao will have more than likely faced and beaten Tim Bradley in a rematch to re-capture the WBO welterweight belt that was stolen from him.

Re: Pacquiao vs. Bradley II: The Revenge of The Swift

Since the welterweight division is so much fun, it just makes sense to have a little fun guessing as to how we might arrive at such a conclusion and why.

___Floyd Mayweather vs. Amir Khan---------------

Here’s what Floyd knows about Khan. He knows he’s a big 147lb fighter that has filled out and lost to B level competition in Lamont Peterson and Bredis Prescott. He knows Prescott annihilated him, and that A- star warrior Danny “Swift” Garcia blasted him. He saw new WBA kingpin Marcos Maidana hammer Khan and put him in great peril while losing to him, and saw elements of the same from his most recent battle with Julio Diaz in Sheffield, England.

In short, he has flaws Floyd finds favorable and he has a huge following.

Nevermind what the narcissistic Mayweather tries to tell you – or himself - he knows that the things he says about Pacquiao not being qualified to fight him is something that rhymes with “pull” and “pit”.

I’ll let you figure that out.

He will be under pressure to beat Khan convincingly after whatever Pacquiao's done to stand in his driveway. The problem is, more than likely it won’t go according to script, even if he does beat Khan.

We all saw Adrien Broner, “The Problem”, have at least 99 of them with Marcos Maidana, who made him his bitch while proving that he “aint one” (my compliments Jay-Z). And whether this proves to be effective or not, Mayweather will face a bolder Khan in light of what happened to Broner.

In fact, I expect a Khan closer to the version that destroyed Zab Judah to climb through the ropes with Floyd.

Because he’s great, Mayweather should survive Khan. But at 37 in March, he’s flirting with that moment we get in sports where we can expect the unexpected. Khan has tremendous speed, size, footwork and power, but his chin has origins in China. Plus he has a few deep seated flaws trainer Virgil Hunter still has to correct. The pick here is Mayweather by spectacular 11th round KO to set up a fall date with Pacquiao, but it’ll be interesting.

---Marcos Maidana vs. ___Shawn Porter ____Keith Thurman vs. ----Adrien Broner

::: Danny Garcia vs. Lucas Matthysse II ::: ::: Paulie Malignaggi vs. Kell Brook :::

Really any of these guys can go to war with each other, and some can prove what kind of flickering stars they really are. Will they fade off into the galaxy or burn ever brighter?

Switch whatever names around you want in this line-up and nobody’s mad at you. This year has been one of the best in boxing’s illustrious history, as the sport experienced a remarkable renaissance. Expect that trend to continue in 2014.

Will Maidana’s menace endure and will he face Broner again? Will Keith Thurman, fresh off of his 9th round desecration of Jesus Soto Karass, explode to championship heights? Can the cunning savvy of the charismatic Paulie Malignaggi cheat elite death once more?

Is Porter a fluke? Will Broner rebound against even more danger? Will Kell Brook make you know his name? Are we to expect a sequel to Danny Garcia vs. Lucas Matthysse, and will they rise to 147lbs?

Will Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao end their torrid saga, and give opposing fan bases the ultimate welter war showdown?

Get ready for an epic 2014.
