They were called "God's greatest hit makers" by many in the music industry. The Staple Singers, inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 1999, were a singing family from Mississippi who wove gospel, pop and soul into message driven songs, cracking the Top 40 eight times between 1971 and 1975.

Before their radio hits, the Staples family music were also a direct source of inspiration to Martin Luther King, Jr.. During the 1960's Civil Rights Movement, the group appeared beside him at rallies in churches and auditoriums, essentially serving as his opening act.

One of their biggest hits "I'll Take You There" (#1 in 1972) is still heard today in Bank of America television commercials.

Greg Kot, author of I'll Take You There: Mavis Staples, The Staple Singers and the March Up Freedom's Highway will speak about the legendary group on Saturday, May 3rd at 1pm inside the Rock Hall's Library and Archives Building (2809 Woodland Avenue, Cleveland).

Most of Kot's book focuses on Mavis Staples, the group's lead singer, and her working and personal relationships with Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Prince and Wilco's Jeff Tweedy among many others.

Immediately following his presentation, Kot will take questions from the audience immediately and will be available to sign copies of his book.
