The Examiner.com College Football Award ballots are in, the votes have been tabulated, and now it is time to announce our top players at each position. Over the past week the college football writers on Examiner.com made our picks for the top players in college football. As the regular season and conference championship games have all been played, with the exception of the annual Army-Navy game (this weekend), college football awards will be coming at you left and right. So we joined in the fun.

Our eighth individual award goes to Stanford senior running back Toby Gerhart.

Gerhart pulled away from Alabama's Mark Ingram in the voting among Examiner.com college football writers. The Stanford running back received 14 first place votes and 64 votes overall while Ingram received nine first place votes and 50 votes overall.

This season Gerhart, a Heisman Trophy finalist scored four touchdowns in the first three games for the Cardinal but he exploded once the PAC 10 season started up. Scoring at least one touchdown in all but one game this season, Gerhart finished the regular seaosn with 26 touchdowns on the ground and 1,736 total rushing yards. The senior averaged 5.6 yards per rush and has rushed for at least 125 yards in five straight games and over 120 yards in six straight games. Only twice this season has Gerhart been limited to under 100 rushing yards, with Wake Forest limited Gerhart to 76 yards on the ground and Oregon just barely keeping the PAC 10's top running back under the century mark with 96 yards.

Nine times this season Gerhart has recorded multiple touchdown performances, with a season high four touchdown runs coming against rival California, representing all of Stanford's scoring in The Big Game. Gerhart has taken the nation by storm with big games against teams like USC and Notre Dame and it has not gone unrewarded. Gerhart was named the PAC 10 Offensive Player of the Year by the conference and was a lock for the conference's all-conference first team. This weekend he will be in New York as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, and many feel he has a good chance of taking home the top individual award in college football.
