Stanford pulls away from the Virginia Cavaliers, 81-60, with sharp shooting

The Stanford Cardinal basketball team won 81-60, making short work of the Virginia Cavaliers in the second half.  The Cardinal outscored the Cavaliers 44-26 to provide an easy 21-point margin of victory Thursday night at Maples Pavilion on the campus of Stanford in Palo Alto.

Junior, Jeremy Green scored 21 points for the Cardinal.

Freshmen Dwight Powell, Anthony Brown, and Aaron Bright added 10, 13, and 12 points respectively.

Stanford shot 13-23 from beyond the three-point line providing the firepower for the runaway win.

A comical moment in the first half: Substitution confusion with players coming onto and off the court during an inbound, had the Cardinal with six players standing around wondering who was the extra substitution.

Inbounding the ball was Andrew Zimmermann, the 6’8” Junior forward, yelling to the bench of the mistake and, smartly, didn’t take the ball from the referee that would have resulted in a technical foul. Once the coaching staff figured it out and had the proper players on the court, Zimmermann turned to the referee and in a comedic tone said, “Too many Freshmen…..”

The Stanford team does have a young team.  Nine freshmen, one sophomore and five juniors will be the Cardinal team challenging PAC-10 rivals this season.

Though, by season’s end, they should be able to count to five.
