Stanford football placed two players on the 2012 Chuck Bednarik Award watch list. Linebackers Chase Thomas and Shayne Skov each made the list as it was announced by the Maxwell Club.

The Bednarik Award is given to the best defensive player in college football.

Thomas passed up an opportunity to go to the NFL this year to come back to Stanford and round out his game. The redshirt senior has 23 sacks and 46 tackles for losses in his career. He has 156 tackles, eight forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one interception. He is a pass rushing outside linebacker that opposing offenses must game plan for.

Skov is a tackling machine who missed most of last year after suffering a knee injury in game three of the season. Skov is expected to be back at full health for this season. He will miss the first game of the season as punishment for a DUI he had in late January.

Once on the field and healthy, Skov is an emotional leader of the Cardinal defense. In 27 career games, Skov has 165 tackles, 11 sacks, 22 tackles for losses, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Skov and Thomas are expected to be leaders on what could be one of the best defenses in the Pac-12 in 2012.

Last year, LSU defensive back Tyrann Mathieu won the Bednarik Award and he is back looking to become the third player to win the award in back to back seasons.
