As usual, Stanford received a lofty ranking in one of the first preseason women's basketball rankings released, as Lindy's placed the Cardinal at No. 5.
But what is more significant is that Stanford was not the highest ranked team from the Pac-12. In fact, the Cardinal was not even the highest ranked team in the Bay Area.
Cal is ranked No. 3 in the Lindy's preseason rankings.
Cal and Stanford finished tied for the Pac-12 regular-season championship last season, running the Cardinal's streak of consecutive conference titles to 13. And Stanford won the conference tournament, beating UCLA in the title game after Cal lost in the semifinals.
However, Cal got to the Final Four last season, while Stanford was upset in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
It raises the question: Will this be the season that Stanford's run of consecutive conference titles ends?
Stanford has nine 2013-2014 games scheduled against teams ranked in Lindy's top 25, including four against teams in the top six. Like last season, the Cardinal plays Cal in consecutive games in span of four days.
Here are the Cardinal's game against Lindy's top 25 teams: No. 1 Connecticut (Nov. 11 in Storrs, Conn,); No. 17 Purdue (Nov. 26, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico); No. 16 Gonzaga (Dec. 16, at Stanford); No. 6 Tennessee (Dec. 21, at Stanford); No. 12 Colorado (Boulder, Colo.); No. 23 UCLA (Jan. 24, at Stanford); No. 3 Cal (Jan. 30, at Stanford); Cal (Feb. 2, Berkeley, Calif.); No. 23 UCLA (Los Angeles)
Here is Lindy's preseason top 25:
