Stanford legend Ken Margerum elected to Hall of Fame

Stanford football wide receiver Ken Margerum was named to the College Football Hall of Fame today.

Margerum was one of the all time Cardinal greats, playing on the Farm from 1977 to 1980. The former All-American was a four-year letter winner and finished his career as the all-time leading receiver with 141 catches, 2,430 yards and 30 receiving touchdowns.

Margerum still shares the Pac-10 record for most receiving touchdowns in a game for his four touchdown effort vs Oregon State in 1980.

Margerum is still tied for 10th at Stanford for career receptions, 5th all-time in receiving yards, 6th in yards per catch (17.2), and his 30 receiving touchdowns is still a Stanford career record.

Margerum also played key roles in Stanford’s two bowl wins under head coach Bill Walsh when they beat LSU in the 1977 Sun Bowl and Georgia in the 1978 Bluebonnet Bowl.

Margerum was drafted in the third round by the Chicago Bears in 1981 where he eventually won a Super Bowl with the Bears. His seven year career ended with two seasons in San Francisco with the 49ers.

Margerum returned to the farm for one year (2004) as an assistant coach before moving south to San Jose State where he continues to reside as a wide receivers coach.

Joining Margerum in the Hall will be:

· Pervis Atkins, HB, New Mexico State (1958-60)
· Tim Brown, WR, Notre Dame (1984-87)
· Chuck Cecil, DB, Arizona (1984-87)
· Ed Dyas, FB, Auburn (1958-60)
· Major Harris, QB, West Virginia (1987-89)
· Gordon Hudson, TE, Brigham Young (1980- 83)
· William Lewis, C, Harvard (1892-93)
· Woodrow Lowe, LB, Alabama (1972-75)
· Steve McMichael - DT, Texas (1976-79)
· Larry Station, LB, Iowa (1982-85)

Coaches Dick McPherson (Umass and Syracuse) and John Robinson (USC and UNLV)  were also elected.

The class of 2009 will be inducted at the National Football Foundation's Annual Awards Dinner on December 8, 2009 in New York City. They will be officially enshrined at the Hall in South Bend, Ind. during ceremonies in the summer of 2010.

There was a funny story recounted by former Stanford broadcaster Bob Murphy about Ken Margerum – his freshman roommate at Stanford was reading his bio about his soon to be roommate. They had not met yet. His roommate was also a new Stanford player and was African-American. He was reading about Ken’s high-school career, which also include winning the state in hurdles or the 100-yards dash or something like that and assumed he was also an African-American player.
When Ken walked through the door with curly blonde hair and flip flops, his new roommate was absolutely sure this was some “haze” of incoming football players. No way could this guy be the same Ken Margerum on paper. It took his roommate (I wish I remembered his name) two days to finally believe he was the real Ken Margerum. He and Ken still laugh about it today each Big Game reunion weekend.
