No. 5 Stanford Cardinal built a 29-0 halftime lead against No. 23 Arizona State Sun Devils and winning the game with a 42-28 score on Saturday, September 13, 2013 at the Stanford Stadium in Stanford, CA. Stanford dominated most of the game until the fourth quarter where the Sun Devils mounted a comeback.
Stanford scored first with Ty Montgomery catching a 17-yard touchdown pass from Cardinal QB Kevin Hogan. Tyler Gaffney added a 1-yard touchdown run for a 13-0 first quarter Stanford lead. Kicker Jordan Williamson missed the PAT for the second touchdown. The Cardinal added two more touchdowns in the second quarter with Anthony Wilkerson's 12-yard touchdown run and another Montgomery touchdown catch, a 30 yard pass from Hogan. Stanford then added safety after a blocked punt in the waning seconds for a dominating 29-0 halftime lead.
The Sun Devils scored in their first possession of the third quarter before the Cardinal responded with a 20-yard Williamson field goal and a Gaffney 16-yard touchdown run to give Stanford a 39-7 lead after the third quarter.
Arizona State mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter scoring 21 unanswered points. Sun Devils QB Taylor Kelly threw three touchdowns from 45, 27, and six yards to cut the Cardinal lead to 39-28. Stanford held, however, and added a field goal late in the quarter for the 42-28 final score.
Stanford retains its No. 5 ranking and improves to 3-0 in the season and 1-0 in PAC-12 play. The Cardinal will travel to Seattle to play Washington State next Saturday before hosting No. 16 Washington on Saturday, October 5, 2013 in Stanford, CA.
