Standley Lake HS copes with tragedy after student sets himself on fire

A Jeffco Schools student is in critical condition after setting fire to himself in a suicide attempt at Standley Lake High School in Westminster on Monday morning.

The 16-year-old student reportedly entered the high school cafeteria and lit himself on fire shortly after 7 am. A custodian used a fire extinguisher to put the fire out, and another staff member was injured when she broke the glass to retrieve the fire extinguisher.

The student remains in critical condition at a local hospital. No other students were injured.

Students were evacuated to Wayne Carle Middle School after the incident and classes were canceled for the day.

The school also canceled Tuesday’s classes, but Standley Lake High School will be open from 7:30 to 11 am for students to retrieve belongings. Additional counselors will be available for students during that time.

Students who ride the bus will be picked up at their regular time, and buses will leave to take students home at 11 am.

Jeffco Schools stated that all activities and athletics were canceled Monday and Tuesday.
