Standard Poodle breed profile

Although the Standard Poodle has the reputation of being a dressy and posh dog, this breed is one of the most intelligent and athletic dogs that has ever been bred.  The original German word "pudel" means "to splash."  Originally a water retriever, the breed has also served as entertainers, guide dogs, obedience winners, and even herding dogs.

Sara Fleming of Cross Lanes, W.Va., can attest to their trainability.  Tegan, her white Standard Poodle, is "hands down the most obedient dog I have ever owned."

Grooming patterns can be traced back to the original haircuts that helped the Standard Poodle maneuver through water.  For example, keeping hair on the hip joints to keep them warm.  It is never too early to start a grooming regimen.  Sara introduced Tegan to grooming at 7 weeks of age.  Undoubtedly, future Standard Poodle owners must budget for trips to the salon!

Lack of shedding is also a plus for the Standard Poodle owner.  "One of my favorite things is that she doesn't shed all over my house!" Sara says.  In addition, temperament is a good selling point.  Sara continues; "She has never met a stranger.  She loves kids and she's pretty gentle with them.  Her best friend is a ferret."

Health problems with the Standard Poodle seem to be minimal.  Of course, any water dog must be monitored for ear infections, which can be common.  Unlike other breeds, obesity is not a major issue.  Sara agrees.  "You get the benefits of having a big dog but not as many of the health problems since there isn't much weight on her.  And I never have to worry about her gaining weight like you do with some breeds."

If you are looking for a smart, beautiful, healthy breed, then the Standard Poodle may just be the perfect fit.  Sara says of Tegan, "There is not a day that goes by that she doesn't make me laugh."
