The Stand Up for Clean Water paddleboard race on Saturday, 12 April at Paradise Cove in Malibu is shaping up to be one of the most highly sought after tickets on the Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) racing circuit in California this year. The benefit on behalf of the Los Angeles Waterkeeper, a non-profit whose mission is to protect and restore regional waterways, is set to include an on the beach afterparty straight out of a Hollywood script, according Rachel Stich, Communications Manager for the Los Angeles Waterkeeper. “We are very excited to announce there will be live music by a celebrity all star band starring Dave Krusen, the former drummer from Pearl Jam; Christopher Thorn, guitarist from Blind Melon, Live and Awol Nation; Rami Jaffee, keyboardist for the Foo Fighters and the Wallflowers; Jessy Greene, former violinist from the Foo Fighters, Wilco and Pink; and Jonny Kaplan, lead singer/guitarist with Jonny Kaplan and the Lazy Stars”, said Stich.

New Belgium Brewing Co. will be donating post race refreshments and the first 300 registrants will each receive a commemorative New Belgium Stand Up for Clean Water pint glass. Additional drinks and food have been generously provided by the Paradise Cove Beach Café.

After battling it out over the 5 mile long course, 1 mile fun course and team relay race, SUP athletes will have the chance to mingle with some of Malibu’s famous residents, in addition to top paddle athletes, such as four time U.S. Olympian Jim Terrell, the founder of Quickblade Paddles, Australia’s Jamie Mitchell, 10x winner of the grueling Molokai to Oahu paddleboard race and Lina Augaitis, the Canadian SUP superstar currently dominating the women’s racing circuit in North America.

Event planning has been in the works for months and it will all come together this weekend. Paradise Cove is one of Malibu’s most idyllic locations and is normally off limits to paddlers. The privately owned property beloved by generations of Southern California beachgoers is a strong proponent of the Waterkeeper’s cause and is proud to be hosting this year’s event alongside National Presenting Sponsor, Toyota. Additional supporters include prominent brands from across the stand up paddleboarding community, such as Bark Paddleboards, Laird SUP, Pro SUP Shop, SIC, Riviera and more. Pro SUP Shop in particular has been a key partner in organizing the event for the past three years by leveraging its extensive network of contacts throughout the SUP community to support the Waterkeepers. “Paradise Cove is going to be an amazing place to hold this year’s Stand Up for Clean Water event,” said Mike Vaughan, owner of the Pro SUP Shop in Marina del Rey.
