According to the Canadian Press, the Calgary Stampeders suspended defensive back Quncy Butler on Friday. The suspension was put into effect because Butler was involved in an altercation outside a Calgary casino on May 15 and has since been charged with two counts of assault.

Butler allegedly hit a taxi driver after being asked to pay a deposit before a trip. Butler then allegedly got physical with a man who was coming to the taxi driver's defense.

Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel put out a statement on Friday expressing his disappointment in Butler and that the defensive back will not start training camp with his teammates on June 1.

However it will be interesting to see if his teammates will be at training camp as well. That is because the players currently do not have a collective bargaining agreement in place with the Canadian Football League for the 2014 season, and there is strong possibility a strike might occur.

A native of San Antonio, Texas, Butler signed as a free agent with the Stampeders on October 17, 2011. He was entering his fourth year with the Stampeders.

A communications major out of Texas Christian University, Butler has National Football League experience with the St. Louis Rams, Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints. At 30 years of age, it will be interesting to see if the newly acquired Lin-J Shell or Dee Webb will take Butler's place when the season starts.

Also on Friday, the Stampeders signed a pair of rookie quarterbacks. They are Brian Hudson out of Campbell University and Bryant Moniz out of the University of Hawaii. Both are expected to battle for the third quarterback spot behind Drew Tate and Bo Levi Mitchell on the depth chart. Tate and Mitchell are expected to battle for the Stampeders' starting job in the preseason.
