Stampeders sign Sykes from AFL

According to the Calgary Stampeders website on Monday, the Calgary Stampeders have signed defensive lineman Joe Sykes from the Arena Football League's San Antonio Talons.

Sykes has prior Canadian Football League experience having played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2009 and Edmonton Eskimos in 2011. But over the last two years Sykes has starred in the Arena Football League. In 2012, Sykes was the Arena Football League defensive player of the year and defensive lineman of the year with the San Jose Sabercats and then last season was the Arena Football League defensive lineman of the year with the Talons.

It will be interesting to see though how Sykes makes the transition of playing very well in an indoor dome to the freezing cold of Canada.

A product of the University of Southern, Sykes could be in the mix to replace Cordarro Law on the defensive line. Law signed a contract with the San Diego Chargers on February 15, after finishing third in the CFL last season with 14 sacks.

Law is one of two defensive players the Stampeders have lost to the NFL in the offseason. On January 3, the New Orleans Saints signed cornerback Derrius Brooks from Calgary.
