According to the Canadian Press, the Calgary Stampeders signed running back Martell Mallett on Thursday.

The acquisition of Mallett is key just in case anything happens to their star running back, Jon Cornish, who was named the most outstanding player in the Canadian Football League this past season.

The Stampeders are taking a little bit of a gamble because Mallett has not played the last two years after tearing his Achilles tendon during training camp while in Hamilton in 2012.

His best year in the CFL came in British Columbia in 2009 when he was the league's rookie of the year. Mallett had 1240 yards in 214 carries and six touchdowns. He also had 43 receptions for 342 yards receiving with two touchdowns.

Mallett then went on to the practice squads in Philadelphia and Cleveland over the next two years. However the Eagles were deep at running back with LeSean McCoy carrying the load, and it was evident that Mallett's opportunities there would be limited.
