Stampeders announce new award

According to the Calgary Stampeders website on Wednesday, the Calgary Stampeders will be presenting a new award on Monday, April 14. The award will be the Herm Harrison Memorial Award and will go to the Stampeder who shows exemplary service within his community.

The award will be presented at the Red and White Club at an event titled The Fan Forum. The event is used to strengthen the Stampeders presence in the community and give the fans an opportunity to interact with the Stampeders players, coaches and personnel.

According to the Canadian Press, Harrison played for the Calgary Stampeders from 1964-1972 and won a Grey Cup in 1971. That year the Stampeders defeated the Toronto Argonauts 14-11.

A tight end who played his university career at Arizona State, Harrison was a three-time Canadian Football League all-star and six-time Canadian Football League Western Division all-star. In 1968, Harrison led the Canadian Football League with 1306 yards receiving.

Harrison was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in Hamilton in 1993. Off the field he was very active with the Special Olympics. The Stampeder legend passed away at the age of 71 on November 2, 2013.
