Maybe you just missed these films in the theaters. That’s fine, that’s what’s so great about things these days. Thanks to all of the ways you can catch up on the movies that you missed in 2013, you can still see these films. And this week is an interesting mix of films. An action picture that pairs two of the most legendary action heroes comes out on DVD today. A touching romantic movie that happens to involve time travel also comes out, as does a quirky kids film about turkeys. Finally, the movie that might win Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto Academy Awards comes out today.
Here are the movies new to DVD on February 4, 2014:
Escape Plan - Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Vincent D’Onofrio. Stallone plays a guy who (and this may stretch your suspension of disbelief to the breaking point already) specializes in the structural security of buildings - like prisons. He agrees to take one last job (don’t they always in these types of movies?). He agrees to test out “The Tomb” the most high-tech and advanced prison in the world. He soon ends up wrongly accused and a prisoner himself and hast to team up with an inmate named Emil Rottmayer (Schwarzenegger) to try to find a way out of the inescapable prison. This movie bombed at the domestic box office, but ended up making back its costs in foreign ticket sales where it was a massive hit. Rated R.
Free Birds - Woody Harrelson, Owen Wilson, Amy Poehler. Reggie is a normal turkey living his turkey life, until he ends up pardoned by the President on Thanksgiving. He now lives the good life at Camp David, unaware of the fate he escaped and what the rest of his turkey brethren are undergoing. Reggie ends up meeting, and being kidnapped by, a turkey leading a turkey revolution named Jake. The two launch into an adventure that involves stealing an experimental time machine and heading back to the first Thanksgiving to try and stop turkeys ending up on the menu in the first place. This animated film did moderately well when released in November, but was not critically loved. Rated PG.
About Time - Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams, Bill Nighy. Tim Lake has a problem - one that he inherited from his father. It turns out that the men in his family can travel back in time. There are rules about what they can and cannot do, but Tim sets about trying to woo the girl he meets one night. It’s a bit like The Time Traveler’s Wife, but it’s funny, touching, romantic and heart-felt. It got moderately decent reviews when it was released, but I can tell you, my wife and I saw it and we loved it. If you are looking for a sweet, quirky, funny, romantic movie for your date night at home while it snows outside - this is the one for you. Rated R.
The Dallas Buyers Clubs - Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto, Jennifer Garner. The movie that has already won several awards and has been nominated for several Academy Awards. McConaughey has been nominated for his portrayal of Ron Woodruff, who is diagnosed with AIDS and told he has six months to live. When he gets frustrated at the lack of medical help and medication, he sets up and illegal system to provide life-saving treatments and drugs for people dying of the disease from other countries. This movie has been critically acclaimed and the performances of McConaughey and Leto have been universally praised as outstanding. Rated R.
