Neither side really looked like troubling the scoreboard with poor finishing and a tight midfield battle combining to keep both sides off the score sheet.
Victory were the better side in the early stages but the Heart defense proved a difficult obstacle for the blue half of Melbourne as they struggled to break through and create chances.
Indeed, it was Heart who had the first chance in the 11th minute as David Williams made a run up the left and sent the ball for Mate Dugandzic on the edge of the area but his shot went wide.
Despite Victory dominating the possession it was Heart who created the chances with Harry Kewell putting Golgol Mebrahtu through in the 21st, allowing Mebrahtu to round Nathan Coe but he couldn't hold his nerve as he hit a poor shot that didn't even look like scoring after such good build up.
As the clock was ticking over the 30 minutes Victory had a solid chance with a corner causing pandemonium in the box leading to an Adrian Leijer shot from close range but Andrew Redmayne made an incredible kick-save to keep the match scoreles.
That led to a solid passage for Victory with Leigh Broxham taking advantage of a Patrick Kisnorbo mistake to get on at goal but he could only hit his effort right at Redmayne.
The Kewell and Mebrahtu combination continued to create chances but again couldn't finish with Kewell setting a ball down for Mebrahtu but again he couldn't find the target as the half ended scoreless.
Victory thought they had a penalty two minutes in to the second half as Adama Traore hit a shot which deflected off of Kisnorbo's arm but Peter Green declined to point to the spot, either not seeing the deflection or determining it unintentional.
The second half saw even less goal mouth action as the two teams struggled to attack with the best chance not coming until the 73rd minute as Pablo Contreas made a run, drawing the defense, allowing him to pass for James Troisi who sent a cross in for an unmarked Archie Thompson who should have done better as he sent his header well wide of goal.
From there the match really faded out as neither side was able to create real chances and ended in a forgettable 0-0 draw.
