September 21, 2010 The Department of Human Health, Health Finder.gov website reports that The GDP, Global Dementia Price Tag for dementia care has escalated to $640 billion. The supporting report came from Alzheimer’s Disease International.
What is America doing to support memory loss research, development, treatment and care in the U.S.?
100,000 dollars was raised for the Alzheimer’s Awareness and research Breakthrough Ride from San Francisco, California to the Washington, D.C. capitol steps.
According to the Breakthrough Ride Event ads, “the hardest hill to climb is capitol hill.” With so many issues competing for the Federal Government’s attention in this bad economy, one of the most important health concerns for America’s ruture and present middle age and aging population is being put on the back burner.
The number of dementia cases, especially Alzheimer's in America and around the world is rising. Without research and clinical trials to find a cure for this devastating disease that affects so many of our nation’s middle age and seniors, the cost to Medicare and Medicaid will continue to rise. Our productive population into partial retirement and retirement years will all be at risk. Every human being has potential for getting Alzheimer’s or some other form of dementia disease.
Passing the Health Care Reform that funds research and other dementia grants was the first step. Now Congress needs to let go of the allocated money in order to prevent, care for, or cure the escalating number of cases in the U.S.
H.R. 3286-Alzheimer’s Breakthrough Act of 2009.
According to Govtrack.U S, H.R.3286 - Alzheimer's Breakthrough Act of 2009 would give Congress the ability to amend the Public Health Service Act to set aside fund's for breakthroughs in Alzheimer's disease research, give assistance to caregivers and increase public awareness on how to take steps to prevent the disease from happening to them or their families.
Introduced July 22, 2009, this bill is still in the first phase of deliberation, investigation and revision. H.R. 3286 was introduced to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Most bills never make it out of committee.
Alzheimer’s research funding benefit’s the economy
With memory loss comes loss of jobs, loss of productivity loss of income, increase in health care expense, and cost to the individual and family for home care or long term care facilities. Others who become afflicted early on may have to file for and collect disability and Medicare SSI benefits, which costs everyone in terms of expenditures to our Medicare system.
