The first thing to remember about the University of Phoenix stadium is that it is not home to the University of Phoenix sports teams. UofP is a for profit school that doesn’t operate any sports teams. They simply hold the naming rights for the stadium.
While it is an indoor stadium it has a grass surface for football. An opening in the side of the building allows the entire grass surface to be removed, so that the grass can be exposed to sunlight and to allow the floor to be used for other events.
The total cost of the stadium was 455 million dollars, with 395 million of that for the actual construction of the stadium, 41.7 million for site improvements, and 17.8 million for the land. The Arizona Cardinals fronted 143.2 million dollars of that cost with the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority fronting 302.3 million dollars, and the City of Glendale kicking in 9.5 million.
Since it opened in 2006 it has hosted the Super Bowl, and the NCAA Championship game. Business Week ranked it one of the ten most impressive Sports Stadiums on the planet. It was the only American facility on that list.
