St. Patrick’s Day is less than two weeks away and tea drinkers know there’s no better way to celebrate than a hearty pour of Irish Breakfast into a fine Belleck china cup. One can find both, along with other Emerald Isle essentials, at The Twisted Shamrock in downtown Ferndale.
Nestled between trendy restaurants and alternative shopping, The Twisted Shamrock has a wide assortment of Irish products including sweaters, pottery and china as well as a pantry of imported food, including Barry’s tea. According to Kathy Monahan, sales consultant and sister of owner, Jim Monahan, Barry’s Tea is so popular, many customers stock up on it several boxes at a time. A staple in many households, Barry’s Tea company still operates in the City of Cork and, according to its website, accounts for 40% of Ireland’s tea sales today.
With the tea, comes the teacup and the Twisted Shamrock has one for every taste and budget: from the “Irish-inspired” china to the modern, heavier pottery styles. But, for the traditionalist, the ultimate is Belleek, and you’ll find an impressive selection of the delicate, cream-colored china as well. Twisted Shamrock also carries vintage pieces which they source directly from Ireland.
Irish tea drinkers are said to drink an average of six cups of tea a day. A stop at The Twisted Shamrock will provide you with all that’s needed in time for that day when everyone’s Irish. Should you need it, there’s even “The Gift of Gab” tea “to give you the Blarney”.
The Twisted Shamrock, located at 276 W. 9 Mile Road, is open seven days a week until March 17th. For more information, see their website.
