St. Patrick’s Day parades in Central PA

It’s almost St. Patrick’s Day – the day when everyone scours their closets for green clothes, becomes honorary Irishmen and women, and then heads out to parades.

Usually Harrisburg and York, hosts of the two major St. Patrick Day Parades, try to have their parades on different Saturdays. Unfortunately this year they will both be held on Saturday, March 16, 2013.

Step-off for the York parade is at 1 p.m. and will proceed east on Market Street to Duke Street. The Harrisburg Parade will step-off at 2 p.m. and the parade route runs down 2nd Street ending at North Street.

Although many garages and parking lots will have event parking (for a flat fee usually), there is also on the street parking – the early bird gets the space! Both parade routes will feature vendors selling foods, balloons, and other St. Patrick Day trinkets so parents may want to bring money with them.

Both parades offer free family fun and some good fresh air – so enjoy whichever parade you choose and then you can head home to your corn beef and cabbage.
