St Paddy's Day Punch Out results; Margarito 'Muggsy' Berzoza passes

The late, great Margarito 'Muggsy' Berzoza

The Denver Athletic Club (DAC) and Poor Boys Boxing (Jim Smith) 2014 ‘St Paddy’s Day Punch Out’ annual fundraising event was again successful with 100% of the live and silent auction proceeds to benefit the Mile High Squash program housed at the DAC.

A few memorabilia items auctioned included a Peyton Manning autographed jersey, John Elway autographed helmet, Willie Mays autographed framed photo, Mickey Ward and Arturo Gatti autographed photo, Meridian Golf Club 4-some with cart and a Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter autographed boxing glove all to benefit the Mile High Squash program.

This year’s event again featured former Denver City Councilman Ed Thomas as the Master of Ceremonies and DAC General Manager Mike Hestera acknowledging corporate sponsors Diamond Cabaret, Boulder Beer and Egan Printing for their continued support along with the many Denver businesses and members who purchased corporate tables helping make the event a success.

The success of the 2014 Denver Athletic Club ‘Boxing Night Extravaganza’ was clearly due to the hard work of many, Event and Marketing Manager Brooklyn Garcia-O’Hare leading the way with the incredible DAC staff always courteous and helpful.

Missing in this event will forever be the smiling face of long-time Denver boxing trainer and DAC employee Mr. Bobby Dunlap who passed away back in 2010, his memory and legacy remaining part of the DAC and their ‘St Paddy’s Day Punch Out’.

The carefully prepared gourmet dinner began with an Iceberg Wedge Salad with bacon, hard cooked egg, tomatoes, blue cheese crumbles and avocado Ranch dressing, the mouth watering and delicious entrée of Herb Crusted Flat Iron with Veal Demi-Glace and Lobster and Shrimp Newberg en Croute with Sauteed Asparagus and Twice Baked Potato barely leaving room for dessert, chocolate Lava Cake with Crème Anglaise garnished with fresh berrries.

The entertainment portion of the evening satisfied all in attendance with boxing main event combatants Giovanni ‘Predator’ Merceron and Joel Vargas engaging in a spirited junior welterweight bout, the obviously smaller but more determined Merceron getting the unanimous decision win.

The co-main event featured young Donovan ‘Slick D’ Estrella taking on a game Elan Simon in an extremely competitive featherweight bout, Estrella remaining undefeated and getting the nod on the scorecards of all three judges for the unanimous decision victory.

Three heavyweight bouts ended with wins by TKO as Cristian Bonilla dispatched of Mason Chesmore by 1st round TKO, Andrew ‘The Hebrew Hammer’ Klein got a weird (eye injury) 2nd round TKO win over Mike Seymour and Terrance Perro gets rid of some rust when stopping Shawn Jeppson by way of 2nd round TKO. Martin Quezada stopped a game Estafa Jahad in the fourth round of their scheduled 4-round featherweight match-up giving all attending an entertaining evening of professional boxing for a more than worthwhile cause.

Sadly, dear friend Margarito ‘Muggsy’ Berzoza, former Denver boxer turned AIBA referee/official who was committed to the success of the Colorado Golden Gloves and scheduled for induction into the Colorado Golden Gloves Hall-Of-Fame March 29th (now posthumously) passed away this past Friday night, losing his battle with liver disease.

Condolences to the Berzoza family and as funeral arrangements are completed the time and date of those services will be shared.
