The religion Roman Catholicism believes that St. Monica prayed for her son, St. Augustine, to convert to Christianity. He eventually did become a Christian. Her feast day is August 27.
Feast Day: August 27
Saint Monica is the patron saint of married women, abuse victims, alcoholics, alcoholism, difficult marriages, disappointing children, homemakers, housewives, married women, mothers, victims of adultery, victims of unfaithfulness, victims of verbal abuse, widows, and wives .
Saint Monica was born in North Africa. The year was 333. Her parents were Christian, however, there is very little known about her childhood.
We do know more about her married life, and life until she died. St. Monica was married to Patricius. He was an official in the town of Tagaste. Patricius was a very violent man with a heated temper. He also committed adultery. Unlike Monica’s Christian faith, he was a pagan.
St. Monica’s marriage, unfortunately, became an unhappy one. Her husband didn’t like when she prayed or gave to the Church. He was very unsupportive. Despite his attitude, St. Monica continued to keep a positive outlook and tried to be nice to the fellow wives in the town. The women knew that she was suffering but admired her positive attitude. St. Monica prayed Patricius to convert to Christianity.
St. Monica and Patricius had three children. They had two boys and one girl. Monica wasn’t allowed to have her children baptized. Being Christian this made her feel very upset and sad. When her oldest son, Augustine, became very sick and her husband agreed that he could be baptized. However, when he got better, her husband withdrew his consent.
St. Monica felt very concerned about Augustine because he became very bitter and mean. He rejected Christianity. She prayed for him daily. He was sent away to school, and he chose to become pagan like his father. Fortunately, Patricius converted to Christianity a few years before he died. After her husband died, St. Monica decided to never marry again.
One day when Augustine visited Monica he spoke very strongly against the Church. St. Monica became so upset that she asked him to leave her house. Later on, she had a vision that encouraged her to invite him back. Monica visited a bishop, and his name is unknown. He told St. Monica that since she cared about Augustine so much that he likely be saved. She felt great comfort in his words.
St. Monica followed Augustine to whatever town he traveled. She talked to Saint Ambrose, and eventually Augustine became a Christian. He was baptized in the Church of Saint John’s the Baptist in the town of Milan.
St. Monica died in the year 387, and she was buried in Ostia. During the sixth century, her body was removed to a hided crypt in the church of Saint Arues. Not until the thirteenth century, did the people begin to celebrate her feast day. In 1430, her relics were brought to Rome. Several miracles have occurred due to Saint Monica. Augustine also became a Saint.
Prayer to Saint Monica
Exemplary Mother of the great Augustine, you perseveringly pursued your wayward son not with wild threats but with prayerful cries to heaven. Intercede for all mothers in our day so that they may learn to draw their children to God. Teach them how to remain close to their children, even the prodigal sons and daughters who have sadly gone astray. Amen.
